Schedule List

Schedule List

We have completed our story boards, to make sure that our time in London is used effectively as we only have a limited amount of it. We have also decided that we are going to be filming at night, the reason for this is because we thought that the city would be more vibrant and colourful in the night. Even though we're doing it in black & white, we think that we by having the bright lights of the city in the night would be more effective with this particular effect unlike shooting it in the day.

We haven't finished out animatic yet, but I don't think that this will be a problem because our story boards pretty much tells us what is going to be happening in the song, and by maaking a Schedule list we can make sure that we are keeping up with time.

Styling Ideas for The Empty Crowd.

Although we are not going to have any of the band feature in the music video we are going to have to create a band for photos in the CD digipac and magazine advert because the audience will want to identify the band and get an image of who they are.

As OneRepublic are quite mainstream and have a wide appeal, our band would also have to fit into the mainstream image. We would dress them in smart casual clothing to create the image of a fashion-conscious group, who want to look good and follow trends. This would appeal to a mainstream audience as they would be showing their star image and look fashionable which would attract more people.

The people in our band, The Empty Crowd, would be a bit younger than the band members of OneRepublic who are all around 30, which we would have to think about when dressing our band members. For example they would have to look smart and "chic" but not dressed to old for their age because they might look a bit out of place or odd.

Parachute are an example of a younger band who have a smart casual style so we would take ideas from them as well as OneRepublic.

Analysis of music video - OneRepublic, Say (All I Need)

This is the music video to OneRepublic's Say (All I Need) their third single from their debut album Dreaming Out Loud.  It was directed by Anthony Mandler who has also directed music videos for several other mainstream artists and bands, for example Rihanna (California King Bed), The Killers, Jay-Z and Mary J. Blige. It was shot in Paris and features all the members of the band walking around the city. The shots of the city are mostly shot in black and white, with the only colour shots being the band performing and when Ryan Tedder, the lead singer and main person in the video, looks at the view of the sunset at the end of the video. The shots of the band performing cut into the story throughout the video, making this an amplification style music video. The cuts between the black & white and colour shots are very effective as it shows a contrast between the story and the source of the music, it also shows a contrast between the locations of the band performing. There is quite bright lighting used in this video to reflect the positive meaning of the lyrics. Throughout the music video there is establishing shots of well-known areas in Paris, for example the Sacre-Coeur at the beginning, with this and the ringing bells gives the audience an idea of a religious meaning to the lyrics. At the beginning, there is an introduction before the music starts which implies to the audience that there is a story to the music video. The bells are introduced with the establishing shot of the Sacre-Coeur, there is then several shots that hint at aspects of story - streets of Paris and Ryan Tedder. When the bells stop there is background noise of the city before the music starts this gives the audience the impression of a story to the music video and an idea of the context before the music starts. The sound of the city after the bells stop almost grounds the story and gives it some reality.

Like in most illustrative music videos the lead singer is the main character in the video, however the other band members feature throughout the video playing their instruments and walking the streets of Paris. The video features typical images of Paris which are interesting for the audience to watch as it is familiar and iconic  - the Sacre-Couer, the metro in the Montmartre area, the Vespa which is a very popular feature of the Parisian lifestyle.

A lot of the shots at the beginning are in slow motion which fits in with the slow rhythm of the music. The use of fading is also quite effective as the shots of the band walking around the city are shot in black and white which adds to the gentle feel of the beginning. Having the city shots in black and white create a strong contrast with the shots of the band performing which is quite effective, especially as the performing shots have a bright almost angelic style lighting. The difference in lighting allows the audience to easily distinguish between the narrative and performance.

The city shots have been edited in post-production and have been given a grainy effect which implies the narrative is set in the past and is either a memory or a dream.

The band are wearing smart casual clothing - jackets, skinny jeans, in quite plain colours so that they blend into their surroundings and look like they belong their. Through their dress you can tell that they are a band because they all look the part. In the video their chic style is indicated in the close-up shot of Ryan's shoes which shows the Lacoste logo. This would appeal to their audience because it shows that they are fashion-conscious and into designer labels, which also shows they are keeping the "star" image of a mainstream band.

The layer effect looks really good on the shots that connect Ryan walking around in the city which is in black and white to the shots of him singing into the microphone which is in colour. Although the colour shots and black & white shots contrast the layering seems to link the two parts of the video together well.

Along with the layering of the shots, the use of slow panning dolly shots and slow motion help create a gentle pace for the slower parts of the song. The visuals link into the music as well when the rhythm of the music picks up there is more camera movement and Ryan and his surroundings seem to move faster.

When the music reaches its height at around 3:00 the cuts get faster and more urgent which is matched by Ryan who starts running and it becomes apparent that he is looking for something. At the end of the video the music slows down again and the narrative creates a sense of calm after Ryan stops running and slowly opens the door and walks out onto the roof at 4:00. The shot then turns from black and white into colour which creates a good effect and implies that he has found what he is looking for and he is back in reality. The lighting is very bright with the sun facing the camera making the shot quite orange and vivid which is quite effective after the duller black and white shots of the city.

I've also learnt about pacing the shots and movement of the shots to the music for example using slow motion, slow panning and fades for slower parts of the song and faster cuts and more action in the parts with quicker rhythm.

Story Board Update

Our story board is taking longer than we have expected, after watching a few music videos we have learnt that there a quite a lot of different shots in a small amount of time. The reason for this is because it makes the audience more engaged and connected with the video, if it was just taken in one take and there wasn't any cutting in the video, it would be very boring to watch. But on the other hand, there are a few one shot videos which are quite interesting and enjoyable to watch. For example with Snow Patrol's 'Open Your Eyes', this video featured a camera attached to a car driving around Paris, of course the setting of where the video is shot plays a very important role because if we were to try and duplicate this where we live or the city that is closest to us, it would seem tacky and amateur as we do not have the landscape and beautiful buildings. So far we have drawn about 48 shots and we're not even half way through the song, we are trying our best to complete it as fast as possible although at the same time making sure that we are able to recognise the shots in the pictures that we drew.

We know that we have got to finish this before the weekend as we are going to start shooting in London, but before we go we have to make sure that we have also done our: Schedule list, to make sure that we film the shots that are in the same location at that time because it wouldn't be time effective at all if we had to keep going back and fourth to the same place to shoot a scene when we could've done it earlier; we also have to create a risk assessment so we can prevent any accidents or be prepared for any accidents that could arise when we're shooting. *Knock wood.

Typical Conventions in Music Videos.

Cutting/ editing in time and to the rhythm of the beat.

Cross-cutting shots of the story part of the video to shots of the band singing the song. This creates a strong visual link between the lyrics, music and visuals and gives the audience an idea of the band - usually used to show the band members, particularly focusing on the lead singer, to give off the image of star personalities. This is even more evident in mainstream solo artists music videos who are nearly always the main focus in the video.

(Parachute - She Is Love)

(OneRepublic - Say All I Need)

(The Script - Before The Worst)

Sometimes there is an introduction before the music starts that gives the context of the story and sets the scene for the video. It also lets the audience connect to the action in the video and makes it seem more like a film which encourages the audience to watch it to the end to follow the story and find out what happens.
However unlike in film as Carol Vernallis points out the editing in music videos can join two shots which have the same composition, shape or colour but are not in the same context.

The continuity does not have to flow like it would in a film for the audience to understand the change, they also wouldn't question if cuts showing the same action jumped to a different location. Like in Coldplay's Fix You the clip shows Chris Martin running in three different locations but not in the order he would have had to have travelled to get to the stage at the end - it cuts from the side of the road, to in the tunnel, to the main street again. The cuts and changing angles makes it more interesting to watch and is faster than earlier in the song which was slower - therefore the cuts were slower.

The most interesting aspects of music videos that draw in the audience are usually done in post-production during the editing whether it is speeding up scenes, slow motion, cutting the shots to the beats in the music or split screens.

Carol Vernallis also points out that a key convention of music video is the use of dolly shots to keep continuous movement for panning, 360˚ and following while walking or running.

We are planning on using some of the typical conventions in our video - the cutting and editing to the fit with the music, the movement in shots (however we can't use a dolly so we will have to use panning and other techniques to keep the video moving) and the cutting between actions to shots with the same action but in a different location (e.g. Katie walking in the same frame in the shot in the country then in the city). However we are breaking the typical convention for having the band performing mixed in with the narrative. We have chosen to not follow this convention because we think the video would be more effective if it is not linked to the music through the visuals of instruments and lip syncing. We also think it fits in better with our overall concept of isolation - Katie will seem more detached if she is the main focus and the video doesn't cut to other people.

Applying Narrative Theorists.

Our music video follows a narrative story therefore narrative theorists would apply to our video. Levi-Strauss' theory of binary opposites applies because our story is all about contrasts between happy and depressed through the character's surroundings. The city and country are opposites and so are Katie's emotions in the two different places.

Todorov's theory about equilibrium that is disrupted but then restored by the end of the story applies to our video as the Katie is taken away from her comfort zone of her normal surroundings of the country and becomes depressed when she is in the city. At the end of the video she is seen back in her natural setting, the countryside which suggests the equilibrium has been restored.

As Katie is the only real character in the video, Propp's theory of character roles does not really apply to our story. However she would be the hero as she is the main character, but could also be see as the "damsel-in-distress" as in some aspects of the story she seems helpless and alone.

According to Andrew Goodwin's theory on typical conventions in music videos we are following some on the typical conventions. In our video there is a connection between the lyrics/music and visuals. We are amplifying the meaning of the lyrics through the narrative and the tone of our visuals and the effects and editing techniques we use will connect to the music. However, we contradict Goodwin's theory by not including the band either performing or acting in our video

Possible outfits for Katie.

We went shopping at the weekend with Katie who is acting in our video to find an outfit that suited her and we thought best represented the boho style that we are going for. We browsed in H&M, Dorthoy Perkins, New Look, Primark, Miss Selfridge and a couple of charity shops to find the most suitable dress.

This is the sort of style dress we are after but the colours are too harsh to give across a soft country look. The busy pattern as well distracts from the flowing skirt and sleeves.

Although this dress was more flowing and lightweight than the others, we felt the colours were still too bright to create the right effect.

Although this printed dress has more subtle colours we had to think of the practicality of Katie riding a horse, the maxi would give her restricted movement and it is not as flowing and lightweight as we want.

We found this in New Look but we thought this looked too lively and busy to create the simple effect that we want.

This dress was flowing and lightweight and the colours were not too strong. The flowery pattern is quite simple and country while not being too overpowering. However the skirt was quite short on Katie which would have been a problem on the horse and looked a bit strange.

This is the dress we went for in the end. It is very flowing and lightweight which looks really effective in the wind. The sleeves are slit-sides which creates an even more flowing effect. We chose to go with a creamy white coloured dress because it is very simple, pure and natural. We chose tan shoes because they are also earthy and very natural. To create an added flowing "free" feel to the dress, we have made a train which goes under the dress and flows out behind her. It is quite long and looks quite effective in the wind. However we are not sure yet if we want to use the train for the shots in London or whether it will just be for the country shots. We are planning to keep Katie's make-up very natural and hair down and loose to add to this pure, natural beauty concept.

Boho Concept.

From the idea of a concept album, with a theme running through the music video, album artwork, styling of the band and songs, we are going to have a boho concept in our video and artwork. We will show this through the clothing and props in the music video. For the artwork we will use handwritten style fonts and soft photography style to show the simplicity and natural style of boho.

This is a moodboard of our concept - it will include quite natural and earthy colours. The dress Katie will be wearing in the video will be quite long and flowing with a floral or nature inspired pattern.

With this style of dress, Katie will look at home and fit in with her surroundings in the country shots but it will make her stand out in the city which will add to the idea that she doesn't belong there. For footwear we are thinking flat-heeled sandals.
We are going into Leicester tonight to get Katie's outift, she's coming along as well so we can see how it looks on her and make sure she feels comfortable and confident in it.

Planning our trip to London.

When thinking about our trip to shoot in London, we have to consider where we are going to stay, when and how we are going to get there and how much it is all going to cost. As well as how we are going to travel around London once we are there.

We are planning to stay in London for two days, trying to keep the expenses of the trip down we are going to stay in a Travelodge and get an off-peak train to London on Friday. We are going to have to go further out and travel by tube into central London.

We are planning to go at an off-peak time on Friday so that the train to London is cheaper. We're going to get TrainLine in Standard Class.

Going on Friday at 8:20 staying at London City Airport for just Friday night and leaving at 21:55 on Saturday on the TrainLine should be around £110 for all 3 of us, which divided by Bank, Katie and me would be around £36 each.

Considering the amount of time we would have filming over the two days we are thinking about staying for two nights which would mean we have three whole days filming.

The other option would to go on Friday at 8:20 and stay in the Travelodge at Wembley which is £96.80 for two nights, with the added cost of the train it total for the weekend will be around £160 divided by 3 is around £53.

We think it would be better to go for longer as it gives us room for mistakes and eventualities.

These prices excludes the cost of living and transport around London. We are going to plan the last points and book the hotel and train this weekend.

Places In London To Shoot

We have come up with a list of places where we can go and shoot our video, we think that it would be really effective and interesting for the audience watching that we visit and include the iconic places in London. The reason that we chose to shoot the city shots in London instead of some other city like Leicester or Birmingham was because we wanted the audience to know where the girl was instantly as they saw the famous landmarks.

The London Eye is one of the most modern places to visit in London, this popular tourist location greets 3.5 million people a year which is more than the Taj Mahal which only gets 2.4 million people a year. The London Eye is the tallest Ferris wheel  in Europe and having the most popular visits in the United Kingdom. When we actually go and shoot here, we want the mis-en-scene to be very simple, just the girl in the shot and the London Eye. This is going to be very hard to achieve, but we think that we can do it if we go there really early, preferably before 7am then there wont be as many people there. We are looking to create a very isolated picture, and this relates to the idea of the country having so much space. Even though the area which the London Eye sits is very big and spacious, it is nothing compared to having the fresh air and the sun beaming on your skin in the countryside.

The Clock Tower or commonly known was Big Ben is the largest four faced chiming clock and the third-tallest free-standing clock tower in the world. The clock tower has become one of the most prominent symbols of both London and England, often in the establishing shot of films set in the city and being the focus of New Year celebrations in the United Kingdom, with radio and TV stations tuning to its chimes to welcome the start of the year. This is one of the reasons that came to mind when we thought about doing some shots here, when the audience sees this particular iconic landmark, they will instinctively know that the shot is set in London. The problem we have here again is with the tourists and how busy its going to be,especially as we are going to film this on a weekend, a few problems could arise like someone might walk in front of the camera and ruin the shot, or it may look too touristy and it wouldn't fit with the concept we're going for.

Other Places we're considering going to.

Good Life OneRepublic Lyrics.

Woke up in London yesterday
Found myself in the city near Piccadilly
Don't really know how I got here
I got some pictures on my phone

New names and numbers that I don't know
Address to places like Abbey Road
Days turns to night, night turns to whatever we want
We're young enough to say

Oh, this has gotta be the good life
This has gotta be the good life
This could really be a good life, good life

I say "Oh, got this feeling that you can't fight"
Like this city is on fire tonight
This could really be a good life, a good, good life

To my friends in New York, I say Hello
My friends in LA they don't know
Where I've been for the past few years or so
Paris to China to Colorado

Sometimes there's airplanes I can't jump out
Sometimes there's bullshit that don't work now
We are God of stories, but please tell me
What there is to complain about?

When you're happy like a fool, let it take you over
When everything is out you gotta take it in

Oh, this has gotta be the good life
This has gotta be the good life
This could really be a good life, good life

I say, "Oh, got this feeling that you can't fight"
Like this city is on fire tonight
This could really be a good life, a good, good life
Oh a good, good life, yeah

Hopelessly
I feel like there might be something that I'll miss
Hopelessly
I feel like the window close oh so quick

Hopelessly
I'm taking a mental picture of you now
Cause hopelessly
The hope is we have so much to feel good about

Oh, this has gotta be the good life
This has gotta be the good life
This could really be a good life, good life

I say "Oh, got this feeling that you can't fight"
Like this city is on fire tonight
This could be a good life, a good, good life
Oh yeah, good, good life, good life, oh, this is

To my friends in New York, I say hello
My friends in LA they don't know
Where I've been for the past few years or so
Paris to China to Colorado

Sometimes there's airplanes I can't jump out
Sometimes there's bullshit that don't work now
We are God of stories but please tell me
What there is to complain about?

Dear Photograph style edits with location shots.

Using Dear Photograph's idea of connecting past and present by placing an old photo on top of a present day photo, I decided to edit the location shots to see how if it creates the right effect. I used black and white shots to represent the old photo.

This edit isn't very as effective as the others because the old photo is too big and the subtlety is lost. Also the lack of shadow from the tree in the old shot makes it look too cut out.

I think it looks more effective when the "past" black and white photo is in the middle of the shot because the eye is naturally drawn into the middle of the photo.

The photos with Katie are more effective as it gives the audience a subject to focus on. However I like the contrast of the bright coloured photograph and the more faded black & white photo. For this one I edited the original background photograph as well which highlighted the shadows in clouds and green of the trees better.

We could incorporate Dear Photograph style in the music video as well - like in Sara Bareilles' the slightly disjunctured image with the polaroid frames and film strips cutting up the video. In post-production a split screen like this could be achieved. I think it is quite effective and makes it more interesting and enhances the story.

Location Test Shots - Country

Today we took a walk down a country road to test out the location for our music video, we found this country road that led down to a big field. We really liked this road, it was isolated, filled with trees and greenery on both sides and we though that this would be the perfect location to shoot our country shots for our concept. This gave us the perfect image of how 'Good Life' can be without all the man made things like cars, buildings etc. You can really see the true beauty of what mother nature has created.

We think that this particular photo we have taken really emphasises the good isolation that we wanted to create, the character is surrounded by such beautiful things like trees, greens and nature's plants. Even though she isn't in her 'Boho' outfit, I think that this gives us a clear idea of what we want from the shot when we get to actually shooting it. We just hope that when we actually get down to shooting, the sun is out so it creates the emphasis of appreciating the natural and beautiful things in life.

One Shot Videos.

The Lazy Song music video was directed by Bruno Mars and Cameron Duddy, some of the lyrics are illustrated in the choreography. The location of the bedroom works with the lyrics of the song and it is almost as if Bruno is performing this for a web cam as he moves closer to the camera, lip-syncing the lyrics.

Cosmo Jarvis directed and performed in his own video of Gay Pirates. It is an illustration music video with the story of the lyrics acted out on stage. Having the music video set on a stage creates an interesting mix between illustration and performance.

This is a very simple one shot video but is quite effective. It's simple Duffy being driven away from Warwick Avenue tube station while singing and crying. The effect is quite strong as it connects to the sad, final-farewell mood of the lyrics.

Feist's 1234 video is set in a warehouse that is brightly coloured which links to the upbeat mood of the song. The colour also comes across in the outfits of the dancers. The choreography of this music video reflects the changes in tempo and introduction of instruments and beat. Throughout the video Feist stands out as she is always centre shot and is wearing a sequin jumpsuit and gold shoes which contrasts to the other dancers' outfits. The audience's attention is kept because the camera pans around and zooms in changing the shots and keeping the movement of the video going.

Although we like the effect of these one shot music videos we think it will be quite hard to achieve with the story that we are going to represent in our video. In London we wouldn't be able to control the crowds of people or the traffic which means it would take quite a few takes which might take days to achieve. Also, it might be hard to cut in the countryside aspect of the story. If we were to do two one shot takes - one in the country, one in the city - we would have to use post-production to incorporate both into our video, for example split screens, which wouldn't be as effective because there would be too much to look at all at one time.

Final Concept

Country Vs. City

We have come up with a concept of shooting in the city and the countryside, the idea behind this is that we wanted to create a scenerio of a country girl who finds herself in the city and wonders through the crowds of people and buildings. In the city, we really wanted to create this idea of isolation, even though the character is surrounded by all of these people she is isolated and unconnected from the world around her.

We were thinking of alternating the shots of the city with the shots of the countryside, playing two stories at the same time then linking it into one at the end.We want to portray a clear contrast between the city and the country, this contrast will be shown by the filming techniques such as using black & white for the city and colour for the country side, and the character's body language and facial expressions in the shots.

In the country, we want to show the audience how free and at home she feels. We are thinking of shooting down a country road with the character just walking down by herself, she feels at home, relaxed and happy. Even though she is by herself and isolated, she is happy and animated, she enjoys the fresh country air; the clear blue skies; the warm sunlight on her skin. To really emphasise she is a country girl, we wanted her to look very bohemian; curly blonde hair, wearing a light chiffon dress that flows with the wind. We are also thinking of including a horse in our video, this will be easy to get as the person who we are getting to play the character competes in competitions and owns several horses, the reason for this is because we wanted to reinforce the idea of appreciating mother nature and the beautiful creations that she makes.

We have been talking about ways of opening our video, and we think that it would be a good idea to start the video with the character sitting on a bench by herself in a busy street. As the song 'Good Life' opens up with 'Woke up in London yesterday', we thought that this would be a good idea to open the video in London. We really want to show how out of place and  unhappy she is so by having her sitting by herself while people ignore her and walk past is really going to make a clear indication of her isolation, then we are going to get shots of her from behind walking through the crowds of people through London. We thought that by getting some over the shoulder shots of her walking through the city would be good because it would show the audience what she sees. This will also make a clear contrast between the city and the country, the location we have chosen for the country is a isolated road where there is no one there and unlike London, its much more peaceful and a relaxed.

Evaluation of pitch feedback.

We would say that we were quite prepared for the pitch, we feel that our animoto presentation gave the audience a clear idea of the concept for our music video. We included all the relevant information so our audience watching could really understand our ideas and what we are trying to achieve.

We were asked a couple of questions, for example we were asked 'How we were going to shoot in London and get the shots that we need?' From this we have thought about practicing the filming techniques and shooting in crowded areas in Leicester to see if we can achieve the right effect before we go to shoot in London, where it is alot more crowded. Once we've done some test shots we will be more prepared and experienced to achieve the high quality shots that we want.

Our audience liked the idea of contrasting the countryside and city, and how the band name linked into our concept of isolation of the character in our music video. To highlight the isolation of the character, we have come up with two types of isolation concepts - in the city even though she is surrounded by crowds of people she is not connected with the world around her, whereas in the country even though she is alone she feels more at home than anywhere else. In our video, you would see this though her body language and facial expressions which will clearly contrast between the city and country shots.

I've added more information about the target market and the techniuqes that we are planning to use to give the audience a clearer idea.

Examples of Concepts

Many artists and bands follow a concept when releasing an album, this is because it allows the artist or band to express their idea to the audience visually. Whether its from using the same sort of mis-en-scene for the music videos or on stage when performing live, it gives the viewer a better idea of what the artist or band is trying to convey through their eyes.

Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends - Coldplay

Coldplay's fourth album 'Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends' released in 2008  used the French Revolution as their concept in video for their first single 'Viva La Vida' Spanish for 'live Long Life', they wore French revolutionary costumes. This theme was chosen because in the album contained songs about love, war and revolutions, unlike their other albums which dealt with less personal problems and more problems to do with humanity. For example 'Violet Hill' and 'Death and All His Friends' expressed the band's views on war and politics, particularly 'Violet Hill' because it talked a lot about war and it also was the band's first anti-war protest song. The video for 'Viva La Vida' directed Hype Williams and released on Coldplay's website in 2008, the video shows the band performing behind a old blurry cracked paint filter, this would've been done either in post-production or shot using a filter to achieve that look. The picture used for the album artwork is a picture painted by Eugène Delacroix called 'Liberty Leading the People' which was altered slightly by graphic designer Tappin Gofton with the name of the album 'Viva La Vida' painted by a brush with white paint.

The E.N.D - Black Eyed Peas

'The E.N.D' is the fifth album released in 2009 by the hip-hop group Black Eyed Peas, this album in particular was a very big and new step for the group as they had completely changed their sound. Will.I.am described the music as 'A lot of dance stuff, real melodic, electronic, soulful. We call it, like, electric static funk'. Their first single 'Boom Boom Pow' directed by Matthew Cullen and Mark Kudsi showed the sound of their album through the use of visual aids such as costumes, props and effects, the video itself is set in 3008 and was based on the line in the song 'I'm so 3008, you're so 2000 and late'. The costumes worn played a big part in the video as it set the tone for the audience of where and when they were, the group wore very futuristic spacy outfits that portrayed the 'electric static funk' sound. The video featured images of computer icons and computer codes flashing in the background, there are also back up dancers wearing a zentai suits. This concept has been taken and used on their other singles like 'Imma Be' and 'Rock That Body' and was also used for their performance during the superbowl half time in America.

Inspiration for Album Artwork.

Parachute are less-known band but have a similar style and genre of music to OneRepublic. Losing Sleep was their debut album and Winterlove was their first EP. I really like the almost faded colour and aged look of these covers. The composition is also really effective, simply the artist and album name underneath makes it stand out. In Winterlove the slight hue change from each side of the picture is very effective especially as the subject is quite dark.

The Way It Was is their second album which was more successful than their first as they had become more popular by then though tours with various mainstream artists. This album artwork features all 5 members of the band which suggests they are more recognised to be put on the cover. Although for our album artwork I wouldn't want to have a picture of the band, I quite like the colour of this cover. I prefer the title of the other two covers though it looks more effective than the artist and album name at the side.

For the album artwork, I think a simple photograph would be most effective for our album. This Tumblr blog uses pictures of the past and present to illustrate the connections between the two which looks every effective. I would also like to experiment with this and see if it is possible to use this technique in the music video as well. http://dearphotograph.com/
